Mission Installation

X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter & Balance of Power

Just follow these few simple steps and you'll be flying in no time. First, locate your XvT folder on your hard drive, usually under C:\Program Files\LucasArts\XwingTie\BalanceOfPower, then follow these steps:

  1. Download the VSG BoP Academy mission, and copy into the TRAIN subdirectory of BoP. This is where all of the game training missions are kept.
  2. After you've done that, look inside the TRAIN folder for the file called REBEL.LST (it will be listed as a .lst file). Open this using notepad or your preferred text editor.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of all the text and make the following addition (without the italicized explanations):
// }
[VSG Tour 1] } This provides the subheading, and only needs to be done once
// }
323 Unique reference number that identifies the mission. This cannot be already in use elsewhere in the Rebel.lst file
vsg_101b.tie Exact name of the mission downloaded to the TRAIN directory, including .tie extension
VSG Tour 1 Mission 1: Battle of Blerthmore Title or description of the mission. This will be displayed in-game when you are looking for the mission
324 Unique reference number
vsg_102b.tie Mission file
VSG Tour 1 Mission 2: Reconnaissance Mission title

Note that you will not initially be flying the 'Battle of Blerthmore' but you can at a later date to obtain historical mission merits.

That's it. You will now be able to play the 'Reconnaissance' mission required for graduation. In the game, go to Fly Solo, then with Rebel missions selected, the mission can be found under Exercises.

When you come to install the next mission, just repeat the process of downloading the mission to the TRAIN folder, and adding another three lines to the rebel.lst file following the same format.

X-Wing Alliance

X-Wing Alliance is slightly different from XvT:BoP, in that you need to make a backup of your original .lst file, and use a .lst and pilot file supplied with the mission. The steps for installation are as follows:

  1. Download the VSG XWA Academy Mission.
  2. Open the zip file and copy the supplied .tie file into your X-Wing Alliance MISSIONS subdirectory.
  3. Next, make a backup copy of your original MISSIONS.LST by renaming it to MISSIONS.ORG.
  4. Go back to the zip file and copy the supplied MISSIONS.LST file into the MISSIONS subdirectory.
  5. Now copy over the provided *.PLT file from the zip file to the main X-Wing Alliance directory.
  6. Run X-Wing Alliance with the new pilot provided. Then, go to the briefing room as you would run a normal campaign mission. This will only work while the mission is incomplete, for subsequent attempts, go to the combat simulator and run under the default mission settings.

Whenever you want to go back to playing the original missions supplied with XWA, just rename the MISSIONS.ORG file back to MISSIONS.LST, overwriting the file that you had recently downloaded.

Reporting Scores

To graduate, you must take a screen shot of the statistics presented after exiting the mission on the mission de-briefing screen. You must also manually type out the in-game score, the number of kills, and the number of assisted kills (eg. 23174, 12 (4) )

There are two ways in which to take a screen shot from in the game:

  1. One is to press the 'Print Screen' key on your keyboard, located top right, above the row insert, home, page up. You then must paste this into a graphics program (Paint, the program that comes with Windows will do) by pressing Ctrl + V at the same time. Then save that picture in either .jpg or .gif format and email it along with your report to your instructor.
  2. The other way is to press Alt + O at the same time (that's the letter O, not the number 0). This then creates a .bmp picture in your XvT directory. Go to this, open it in a graphics program (again, paint will do), and save it as a .jpg or .gif file. Then email it along with your report to Access denied for user ''@'localhost' (using password: NO)
